Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) is currently serving as governor of Michigan who recently made headlines and not for the best reason. Previously she had served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015. She has served as governor since 2019.
Gretchen was born and raised in Michigan and clearly, still is serving her great state. She graduated from Michigan State University and the Michigan State University College of Law. She had made a bid for the MI House of Representatives which was unsuccessful, she then went on to be elected in 2000. In 2006, she was elected to the state senate where she served until 2015. She had the honor to be the first female Democratic leader from 2011 until her tenure ended 2015. In 2016 she also served as Ingham County County Prosecutor for around 6 months.
In 2018, Whitmer had stepped up to run as governor in the gubernatorial election. She went on to defeat Attorney General Bill Schuette (R-MI). One of her biggest pledges for her term was to "fix the damn roads", which she says in this ad. Gretchen had a rough time passing the legislature with the republican controlled government in the state. She also prided herself with expanding Medicaid and women's healthcare.
Here's where the interesting part of her term comes in... the Covid-19 pandemic. Along with many governors, Whitmer had issued a stay-at-home order for MI. In April, things got worse. So, Gretchen took action and made the restrictions a bit more strict. Trump supporters and conservatives in Michigan did not like this a protested these new orders. She took appropriate actions depending on the situation of the virus. Many began to think her measures were tyrannical and began a movement to Recall Whitmer. This leads to a revealed attempted kidnapping plot to kill her.
In October 2020, a group of six men associated with the Wolverine Watchmen planned to kidnap, kill her, and overthrow the MI government. Gretchen is safe and thanked all who helped protect her and keep her safe.
Gretchen delivered the Democratic response to Trump's State of the Union speech in 2020. She had publically endorsed Biden, and was considered one of the top choices for his running mate. Others included Susan Rice, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Gina Raimondo. She was also speculated to be included in the Biden Cabinet, however, she declined as decided to finish her term in MI. She was chosen to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee in early 2021.
Gretchen is a public servant who helped turn the COVID-19 cases in MI and is dedicated to Michiganders. She will seek a tough re-election campaign in 2022 by republicans. She is also seen as a contender for 2024 if Biden doesn't seek re-election (I hope he doesn't). Gretchen has proven her skills but has faced a tough time passing new bills with republican control and the push back she has faced by conservatives.
